Asynchronous Recording Tools Quick Reference Chart

PowerPoint

  • Design and experience: Record directly within PowerPoint and export as a PPT file and/or a movie file (MP4).
  • Save location: The PPT file and initial movie file will be on the device (local hard drive).
  • Student access: The Media Gallery upload will be saved in the Media Gallery in Canvas. Must be uploaded into Resources (PPT file) and/or Media Gallery (mp4) within the Canvas course site.
  • Captioning options: Must be added after the recording via Media Gallery’s captioning service. These can be machine processed or requested for human captioning.  Both can be edited after completion.

Zoom

  • Design and experience: Schedule a Zoom meeting, start the meeting and record. Files saved to your computer will need to be uploaded into Media Gallery. Files saved to the cloud can be accessed via Online Meetings or the sharable link.
  • Save location: Zoom Cloud (recommended) or on the device (local hard drive).
  • Student access: Cloud: If the meeting is scheduled and recorded through the Online Meetings in Canvas, this can be accessed under the Online Meetings -> Cloud Recordings tab. Local: After the recording is uploaded into Media Gallery, students will access via the Media Gallery for the Canvas course site.
  • Captioning options: Cloud recordings can be automatically transcribed by turning the option on in your account settings. These will be machine processed and can be edited after completion. Local recordings saved to the computer can be transcribed after uploading into Media Gallery.

Lecture Capture (Panopto via Canvas)

  • Design and experience: Add Lecture Capture to your Canvas site via the Site Settings. Once added, click on “Launch Panopto” to open the screen recording software. All recordings will become available via Canvas.
  • Save location: Panopto storage via Canvas.
  • Student access: Via the Canvas course site.
  • Captioning options: A caption file (SRT) must be uploaded and connected to your video recording. This is a strictly manual process.

Canvas Media (Kaltura Capture)

  • Design and experience: In Canvas, click on My Media (in the global navigation) -> Add new -> screen recording. This will prompt you to open/ download Kaltura. Complete the recording and the final file will be automatically loaded into Media Gallery.
  • Save location: Kaltura storage via Canvas access.
  • Student access: Via the Canvas course site.
  • Captioning options: Can be added after the recording processes within Media Gallery in Canvas. These can be machine processed or requested for human captioning.  Both can be edited after completion.
